Helm Hammerhand was the ninth Male monarch of Rohan, and the end of the first line of its Kings. His rule was plagued by war with the Dunlendings that attempted to usurp his rule of Rohan.
Biography
Captain was born in TA 2691 and was the son of Gram. He became king in TA 2741 at the age of 50, when Gram died after years of open warfare with the Dunlendings, who operated from the captured fortress of Isengard.
During his reign, King Helm came into conflict with an big-headed and powerful landowner named Freca. Freca was a Dunlending with Rohirric blood; he claimed to exist a descendant of King Fréawine of Rohan. Freca held lands in the West-March as well as exterior Rohan - both banks of the river Adorn and his stronghold was most its source on the borders of Rohan. Freca viewed Male monarch Helm with both contempt and scorn, while Helm mistrusted Freca and was wary of him.
In TA 2754, Freca attempted to intimidate and coerce Male monarch Helm into giving his approval and consent to an arranged marriage between Freca's son Wulf and Captain'due south daughter. Freca marched to a meeting of the Male monarch'southward quango in Edoras with a large number of retainers, planning to threaten the King into complying with his demands. In the resulting quarrel, Captain Hammerhand smote Freca with single accident from his fist. The blow was so peachy Freca died soon later. Enraged, the men of Freca left Edoras, and Rex Captain alleged Wulf and his kin enemies of the King.
4 years later in TA 2758, a combined strength of Dunlendings under the leadership of Wulf, Corsairs of Umbar and Easterlings overran Rohan. Helm was defeated in battle at the Crossings of Isen, and withdrew into the Súthburg at Helm'due south Deep (which was later renamed in his honor). There, he endured a long siege.
While Male monarch Captain and his younger son Prince Háma were besieged in the Hornburg, a forcefulness of Dunlendings nether the leadership of Wulf also besieged Edoras. Prince Haleth, Male monarch Captain's elder son, led the defence force of Edoras. He was the final to autumn defending the doors of the Golden Hall.
Before long later on Yule 2758, Prince Háma accompanied by a small force went out to search for food, simply he and his men were lost in a blizzard and never seen over again. The Súthburg held a large war-horn, and whenever it was diddled, Helm would break through the Dunlending ranks, slaying many of their men. Helm's enemies came to fear him greatly during this time and it was believed that he became and then tearing and terrible, that he slew many of them with his bare hands. Information technology was also believed that when he grew hungry and had no food he ate men.
It was said that grief and hunger made Captain more than ferocious. Afterwards one such sortie, Helm died and did not return; his torso was discovered the side by side morning frozen in the snow still standing, his eyes open, ready to fight. This led to a belief amongst the Rohirrim and Dunlendings that even in expiry the wraith of Captain Hammerhand still wandered through Rohan, and dedicated the Hornburg. Captain died in TA 2759 at the age of sixty-eight. Prince Haleth and Prince Háma likewise died during the war; his nephew Fréaláf Hildeson, who defeated the Dunlendings, succeeded Captain.
Helm was called Hammerhand because of his slap-up strength and prowess with his fists: he was known to fight barehanded. This is sometimes attributed to a superstition that if "he used no weapon no weapon would upon bite him".[one] [2]
