Production [edit]

Development [edit]

On January 8, 2017, The CW renewed Arrow for a sixth flavor.[58] This was the terminal season to feature Wendy Mericle as showrunner; Marc Guggenheim served as co-showrunner.[59]

Writing [edit]

The fifth-season finale ended with Oliver Queen and William Clayton witnessing the island Lian Yu explode as a effect of Adrian Hunt shooting himself, a dead man'southward switch, with many of Oliver's allies still on the island.[60] Guggenheim said the fates of the characters would be revealed in the sixth season, but cautioned, "I know anybody is trying to make up one's mind who survives, who dies, what is the consequence of the cliffhanger based upon people's contractual condition, and I would say that's not necessarily a practiced idea". He compared this to The Walking Dead flavour half-dozen finale because it had "a group of characters, all of whom were serial regulars, in a dire state of affairs at the end of their season. Just because they were series regulars did non hateful that everyone came out of that cliffhanger alive."[61] He also said the theme of the sixth flavor would be "family unit", calculation that "terminal year we spent a whole season really building upward this team, this new Team Arrow, and this year nosotros've got the team in place – what sort of impairment can we do? Then much of Pointer lives in the challenges and trials that we put the characters through."[62]

Casting [edit]

Principal cast members Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, Willa Holland, Emily Bett Rickards, Echo Kellum and Paul Blackthorne return from previous seasons every bit Oliver Queen, John Diggle, Thea Queen, Felicity Smoak, Curtis Holt and Quentin Lance.[60] Rick Gonzalez and Juliana Harkavy, who recurred in the fifth season as Rene Ramirez and Dinah Drake respectively were promoted to the primary cast for the 6th flavour.[63] Katie Cassidy, who portrayed Laurel Lance / Blackness Canary as a regular from season 1 to four and recurred as the character'southward Earth-ii doppelganger Black Siren in season five, was reinstated as a regular for season half dozen, playing the latter role.[64] Cassidy also portrayed the World-1 Laurel in "Fundamentals".[65] As with the fifth season, Holland was contracted only to appear in a limited number of episodes, but Guggenheim declined to reveal how many exactly.[66] The netherlands left the series subsequently her contract expired, her terminal advent every bit a regular existence "The Thanatos Social club".[67] This was as well Blackthorne'due south final season equally a regular; he left after the flavour finale.[68] Former series regulars Manu Bennett and Josh Segarra returned every bit Slade Wilson and Adrian Chase respectively in a guest capacity.[69] [70] Colin Donnell, also a former series regular, returned for two unlike roles as a guest: the World-X version of Tommy Merlyn who is that World's Prometheus;[71] and Christopher Chance / Human Target disguised every bit the Earth-1 Tommy.[72] Colton Haynes, who starred every bit Roy Harper / Armory in seasons two and 3 and was a guest star in season four, once more returned in a guest chapters.[73]

Design [edit]

Maya Mani designed the costumes for the flavour.[74] Oliver's Green Arrow suit from the 5th flavour is retained in the sixth without any changes.[75] Additionally, he wears his original "Hood" outfit from the first season during the episode "Fundamentals".[76] In the sixth season, Diggle gains a new Spartan costume and helmet, which eschew the gray overtones of previous Spartan costumes, and instead take a black and ruby-red scheme.[77] The Wild Dog costume for the season was substantially revamped; while the original introduced in season five consisted of "a hockey jersey, hockey mask and holsters", the new costume was made to be more tactical and armor-like, while retaining the older costume'due south colour scheme.[75] [78] The Black Canary costume introduced in the season consists of a domino mask, long gloves and a bo staff.[74]

Filming [edit]

Filming for the season began on July 6, 2017, in Vancouver, British Columbia.[79] The episode "Thanksgiving" re-uses archive footage of Billy Joel from his concert of August 4, 2015, at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, performing the song "No Man'due south Land". To do this, Guggenheim personally wrote to Joel seeking permission.[80] Filming for the flavor ended in late April 2018.[81]

Arrowverse tie-ins [edit]

In May 2017, The CW president Mark Pedowitz officially announced plans for a four-show Arrowverse crossover event, crossing over episodes of the boob tube serial Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Pointer.[82] The crossover, Crunch on Globe-X, began with Supergirl and a special airing of Arrow on November 27, 2017, and concluded on The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow on Nov 28.[83] Throughout the crossover, Stephen Amell also portrayed Oliver'southward Earth-X doppelganger Dark Pointer.[48] Patrick Sabongui, who recurs as David Singh on The Flash, made a guest advent in the episode "All for Nothing",[84] while the graphic symbol Barry Allen / The Flash did so in the following episode "The Devil'southward Greatest Trick"; Grant Gustin did not film any scenes, since the character is merely shown speeding through lightning.[85]

The season began airing in the United States on The CW on Oct 12, 2017,[3] and completed its 23-episode run on May 17, 2018.[25]

The website's critical consensus reads, "Arrow 's sixth flavor deals with the literal fallout from the explosion in flavour five'southward finale and promises a drastic change in direction for the serial."[89] Jesse Schedeen of IGN rated the entire flavour six.7 out of 10, saying, "Arrow 's 6th season may non qualify equally the show'due south worst, but but because information technology improved a great deal in its final two months. Prior to that, the season squandered nearly of the potential afforded by Season 5, declining to residue its many characters and languishing nether a disappointingly bland villain. It'southward expert that the show eventually regained its ground, but there'due south no reason things should have gone so far off the rails in the first identify."[i]
